Chelsea had only just exited this season’s Champions League when Enzo Fernandez voiced uncertainty over his future at the club. “Will I stay at Chelsea? I don’t know,” said the midfielder. Right now I’m only thinking about the Premier League. We’ve got eight games left to play, and then there’s the FA Cup. In June, there’s the World Cup. We’ll see what happens after that.”

Fernandez, for context, is Chelsea’s vice-captain. He is meant to be a leader for the Stamford Bridge club, yet he is openly speculating about leaving at the end of the season when Chelsea still has plenty to play for. These comments were potentially revealing about the culture within the Blues dressing room.
The past few weeks have been damaging for Chelsea. Liam Rosenior’s team have lost their last three games in all competitions with some now questioning if the former Strasbourg boss is the right man for the job at Stamford Bridge. Rosenior is struggling to find answers to the problems that Enzo Maresca suffered from before him.
Chelsea’s transfer model has seen the club spend a lot of money on exciting young players. Fernandez was one of those players when he joined the Blues from Benfica for a record fee of €121m after impressing for Argentina at the 2022 World Cup. Now, though, there are doubts over his future beyond the end of the season.

By signing so many players, Chelsea has made it difficult for any manager to achieve anything lasting. Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino and Maresca all struggled for consistency under the ownership of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital who view Chelsea as a player trading platform rather than a soccer club.
Fernandez could be next to be traded out of the club. Last summer, Noni Madueke was sold to Arsenal because the transfer could be put down in the books as a profit, despite the fact it would strengthen a direct rival. Madueke is now an important figure for an Arsenal team on the brink of the Premier League title.
Chelsea has made itself a stepping stone club by adopting this model. Previously, the Stamford Bridge club positioned itself as the apex of English and European soccer. Players signed for Chelsea to win things. Now, as Fernandez’s comments suggest, they join the club to put themselves in the shop window for another transfer. This isn’t what Chelsea fans want their club to be.
