The Duke Blue Devils are set to play the St. John’s Red Storm on Friday in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament, and they could be getting a key player back for the matchup.
Duke head coach Jon Scheyer spoke with John Rothstein of CBS Sports and revealed that starting point guard Caleb Foster has a chance to play in Friday’s game.
“The way that he has worked, the chances have continued to increase. I even think that there is an outside chance, maybe, for Friday,” he said. “He’s trying to do the impossible here and come back as soon as he can. This weekend, I don’t think that I can rule it out because of who he is and how he’s been working.”
Foster broke his foot in the regular season finale against North Carolina and has missed the past five games for the Blue Devils. The junior had started 30 of their 31 games before suffering the injury, averaging 8.5 points, 2.8 assists, and 3.6 rebounds per game. While they have won all five of those games, they have had several close calls, and it would be massive to get the veteran guard back against one of the best defenses in the country.
True freshman Cayden Boozer has started all five games at point guard since Foster went down and has stepped up. He is playing his best basketball of the season, averaging 13.8 points, 3.2 assists, and 3.4 rebounds in that stretch. The biggest difference comes in their shooting and ability to help space the floor. Foster is shooting 40.2% from 3-point range this season, while Boozer is at 28.1%.
