The San Francisco Giants didn’t begin the season off on a good note, being swept by the New York Yankees at home to begin the regular season, including a tough Opening Night loss.
While the Giants need to make strides moving forward as a team, they have begun to add outside help this season. Instead of a prospect promotion or a free agent signing, the Giants are swinging a trade with the Detroit Tigers.
According to Robert Murray of Fansided.com, the Giants are trading cash considerations to the Tigers for a righty reliever with a 1.38 career ERA.

“Sources: the Giants are acquiring reliever Dylan Smith in a trade with the Tigers for cash considerations,” Murray reports. “Smith was recently designated for assignment by Detroit.”
Instead of letting Smith make it back to the Tigers’ minor-league affiliate or be picked up on the open market, the Giants are making a trade to add the righty reliever.
The 25-year-old has made seven appearances in the Major Leagues in his career, and across 13 innings in those seven outings, Smith has a 1.38 ERA and four strikeouts with a 0.85 WHIP.

This spring, in two outings, he had a 0.00 ERA with two strikeouts in 2.1 innings pitched. While a small sample size, his 2025 minor league stats are interesting.
In 30 appearances during the 2025 minor league season, Smith had a 2.27 ERA with a 4-1 record, three saves, four holds, and 57 strikeouts across 39.2 innings pitched.
His 3.92 ERA in 222.2 innings in the minors is a fairly solid number and is definitely someone worth taking a chance on for the Giants.
This is an intriguing trade for the Giants, as Smith has shown to be a solid pitcher in his professional career, is only 25 years old, and could be a nice depth addition to the bullpen.
