There’s doing what’s needed, and then there’s what the Toronto Blue Jays just did to open the season.
A three-game sweep against the Athletics is very impressive, as the A’s have one of the best lineups in Major League Baseball. Not only did the Blue Jays do what was needed against the Athletics, winning all three games, but they were absolutely dominant on the mound.
According to ESPN, the Blue Jays’ pitching staff was so good that it made Major League Baseball history.
“The Blue Jays started the 50th season in team history by striking out 50 batters in their opening series against the Athletics, setting the major league record for strikeouts in the first three games of the season…
“The 50 strikeouts tied the franchise record for the most in a single series. Toronto pitchers needed four games to fan 50 Tigers in a season-opening series against Detroit in March 2019,” ESPN wrote.
Early in the season, pitchers are usually still finding their stuff. Command and velocity typically aren’t where they need to be, and while we can somewhat say the same about hitters, it goes to show that this Blue Jays team can be very, very good.
What’s also impressive is that the Blue Jays came back and won two of the games. Instead of rolling over and not showing any toughness, the offense and bullpen did what was needed later in the games.
