ETIHAD STADIUM, MANCHESTER — Manchester City host Liverpool on Saturday with a place in the FA Cup semifinals on the line.
It could be a poignant occasion for Mohamed Salah, who is set to play for Liverpool for the first time since announcing he will leave Anfield at the end of this season.
The Reds’ on-field rivalry with City has been the defining one in terms of sporting excellence during Salah’s decorated nine seasons on Merseyside, and he will be keen to sign off with a flourish.
City should be riding high on confidence after beating Premier League leaders Arsenal 2-0 at Wembley to lift the Carabao Cup prior to the international break.

We’re back underway. No changes for either side just yet.
Halftime
Well, well, well. After Liverpool were probably the better team for most of that half, City go bang bang and have one foot back and Wembley. Haaland back among the goals too. Woof!
45+2 mins: GOOOOOAAAAALLLLLL!!!! Erling Haaland!!!!!
Ohhh, I say! What a delightful goal. Cherki stuns a delicious pass to the overlapping Semenyo, who floats a cross for Haaland to glance into the far corner.
44 mins: Liverpool scrambling under. a couple of crosses. How is Nico O’Reilly basically always in the right place. It’s ridiculous. Rodri arrows a ball into Cherki but, after a wonderful first touch, the chance passes him by.
40 mins: GOOOOOAAAAALLLLLL!!!! Erling Haaland!!!!!
Mamardashvili saved a Haaland spot kick on this ground in November. He went right that time. He goes left this time and Haaland tucks the ball into the vacant corner.
38 mins: PENALTY TO MANCHESTER CITY! Nunes shuffles into the area, the balk breaks to O’Reilly, Van Dijk treads on his foot and Oliver points to the spot.
36 mins: Rodri implored to “shooooot” by the Etihad crowd. Liverpool don’t seem too bothered by the prospect so he does. It’s blocked, spins to O’Reilly and City win a corner.
34 mins: Liverpool break despite Rodri grabbing Ekitike around the waist. When play stops, the Spain midfielder is booked.
32 mins: Cherki starting to purr now as he comes in off the right. The France playmaker now pops up on the left but his attempt to play Doku in runs out for a goal kick.
30 mins: Doku back on the charge. Plays a pass into thebox to no one in particular. Szoboszlai wasn’t to know that and City have a corner. They work it short and play it well. Van Dijk ends up making an important clearance with the hitherto peripheral Haaland lurking.
27 mins: Salah finds Jones inside the City box. He looks to set a shot up for Gravenberch. Rodri gets his studs to the ball but that only tees up Ekitike to lash over.
24 mins: Khusanov scythes into a trademark challenge to give City the chance to break. Gravenberch pulls back Doku and earns the first booking of the afternoon.
23 mins: Everyone’s calmed down a bit now. Gomez hoicks a long throw towards the City are to no great effect.
18 mins: Now then. Cherki goes down under a challenge from Kerkez. No penalty. No VAR check. The City bench are furious, Slot offers them some choice observations. Spicy.
17 mins: Cherki into the Liverpool box and Mamardashvili gathers. Again, he launches it quickly – that’s an obvious plan – but Guehi has the measure of Salah this time.
14 mins: City settle into a settled bit of possession, at the end of which Nunes fizzes drive into Mamardashvili’s palms. The Liverpool goalkeeper thinks fast and booms a long clearance into the right-back space Nunes vacated. Salah likes it. Khuansov is in pursuit, gets a touch on the bouncing ball but overshoots it. Salah has a chance from a tight angle and a scrambling Khusanov gets a boot on the shot to skew it off target.
11 mins: Nice interplay from Wirtz and Ekitike before the latter scuffs his shot wide.
8 mins: Sluggish start from City and Liverpool are at them again. Szoboszlai crashes a blistering drive that stings someone’s leg and bounces to safety.
7 mins: Cherki shuffles into the Liverpool box and wins a corner off Konate. Silva’s delivery ends up in Mamardashvili.
4 mins: Free-kick to Liverpool on the left. Konate gets to a looping header that’s easy work for Trafford.
3 mins: Liverpool enjoy a sustained spell of pressure after Doku doesn’t get the free-kick he wants from Gomez. It ends with Khusanov taking all of the sting out of a Wirtz shot and Trafford gathers.

We’re underway. City in their Carabao Cup final shape for starters, with Semenyo on the right and Cherki through the middle.
5 mins before kick off: Here come the teams out into a rare old atmosphere. Liverpool have 6,000 fans here today, with the increased away allocation that the FA Cup allows.
10 mins before kickoff: Former Liverpool first-team coach Pep Lijnders will be in the City dugout today, with Pep Guardiola suspended and watching fron the stands. A lovely bit of a narrative for you there.

30 mins before kickoff: Another player with a rich history in this fixture is Bernardo Silva. The City captain is out of contract at the end of this season and rumoured to be on his way after a nine-year stint that has encompassed six Premier League titles, five Carabao Cups, two FA Cups and a Champions League. He’s also on nine bookings for the season in the top flight, but a yellow card today would not herald a two-match ban. Silva must avoid that fate at Chelsea next weekend if he wants to lead City out for their potentially pivotal showdown with Arsenal on April 19.
50 mins before kickoff: Salah is indeed fit to start for Liverpool. Curtis Jones gets the nod over Alexis Mac Allister to start in midfield. Joe Gomez is at right-back, allowing Dominik Szoboszlai to operate in his natural position having scored in two of his past three appearances against City. Alexandker Isak has not been passed fit to make the bench.
