Detroit – This loss is another of many recently for the Red Wings that will sting.
The Red Wings made a furious comeback Sunday, erasing a three-goal third period deficit, but still lost 5-4.
Kirill Kaprizov’s third goal of the game and 43rd of the season, at 18 minutes 9 seconds of the third period, gave Minnesota a 5-4 victory. The one-timer on the power play, after a Patrick Kane tripping penalty, ended hopes for a dramatic Wings’ comeback.
Kane’s 15th goal at 14:36 tied the game and capped a furious Wings’ rally. Kane slipped free in front of the net and scooped a pass from Alex DeBrincat past goaltender Filip Gustavsson.
Axel Sandin-Pellikka and J.T. Compher goals earlier in the period cut a 4-1 deficit to within one goal. Sandin-Pellikka scored his seventh goal at 7:18, on a long-range shot that Gustavsson didn’t see with bodies in front. Compher scored his 11th tipping in a pass from Simon Edvinsson.
Minnesota scored four second-period goals, erasing a 1-0 Wings’ lead and bringing out the boos from the LCA crowd. Shortly after that, the Wings made a spirited rally, eventually tying the game.
Albert Johansson opened the Wings’ scoring and goaltender Cam Talbot stopped 15 of 20 shots.
The Wings (40-29-8, 88 points) failed to make up to any ground in the playoff chase for the second and final Eastern Conference wildcard chase – currently held by Ottawa, with an identical 88 points – despite many of the teams around them in the standings also losing the past several days.
This was the start of a four-game homestand for the Wings, and it began perfectly.
Johansson, on a rush up the ice, surprised Gustavsson with a blast from inside the circle for Johansson’s third goal, at 1:40.
Talbot preserved the 1-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes with several good stops, as Wings enjoyed scoring a rare first period goal and holding a first period lead.
But it all collapsed in the middle period.
Matt Boldy began the Wild onslaught with his 41st goal, just 18 seconds into the period off a two-on-one rush.
The Wild made it 2-1 at 1:25 when Kiril Kaprizov scored the first of his two goals in the period, deflecting Ryan Hartman’s shot past Talbot. Minnesota pushed it to 3-1 on former Red Wing Vladimir Tarasenko’s 22nd goal. Moments after a Wild power play expired, Jake Middleton found Tarasenko lingering near the side of the net and Tarasenko beat Talbot high at 7:03.
Kaprizov capped the second-period Wild explosion with his 42nd goal, and second of the period. Kaprizov raced down wing and beat Talbot shortside at 12:32.
