As the Washington Huskies rode a 20-game win streak to the top of the Big Ten, one of the biggest catalysts for coach Heather Tarr’s team has been Giselle Alvarez at third base.
When Softball America released its midseason positional rankings on Friday, the outlet ranked Alvarez as the No. 4 player in the nation at her position as she’s enjoyed a massive power surge during her third season on Montlake, anchoring the middle of Tarr’s lineup. She leads the Huskies with 47 runs batted in (No. 5 in the Big Ten) and is tied with Alexis DeBoer for the team lead with 13 home runs (the pair is also tied for No. 3 in the Big Ten in the category).
Alvarez also leads the team with 100 total bases and 51 hits, while her .381 batting average and 1.155 OPS rank No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.

After losing three of their last four games, dropping two to Saint Mary’s and splitting a pair with No. 24 Stanford on a quick trip to Palo Alto, California, the Huskies are going to lean heavily on Alvarez over their final 12 games of the regular season, with a pair of series against the ranked Oregon Ducks and UCLA Bruins on the horizon.
With teams largely working around DeBoer, who has been walked a team-high 34 times this season (the second-most in the conference), Alvarez has been put in several big spots this year and has done a great job coming through when the Huskies need her most, with runners on base.
As Tarr’s team looks to host an NCAA Regional for the first time since 2023, Alvarez will continue to be one of the biggest keys to Washington’s success.
