BOSTON, Mass — The New England Patriots were expected to be active in the wide receiver market during free agency, and they certainly were. However, a lot of other teams were also making big moves, which led to a few top guys finding homes elsewhere very quickly.
But New England still managed to secure a talented weapon, signing former Green Bay Packers receiver Romeo Doubs to a four-year, $80 million deal.
And it’s a move one Patriots legend was very happy about.
“He’s a professional,” Julian Edelman told Patriots Wire on Saturday night during an exclusive conversation at the Sam Adams Our City Our Beer launch party. “I’m really excited to see him with Drake. He’s got a lot in his route tree. He’s consistent. And I think bringing a player with that professionalism in that room, I think it’s going to be great.”
Yet, Edelman made it clear that there is one person on the current roster whose opinion matters the most.
“It all depends on what Drake thinks, though, right,” he added. “So we’ll see.”
Doubs spent the first four years of his career in Green Bay, having been a fifth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Last season, he put up his best numbers, finishing with a career-high and team-leading 724 receiving yards across 55 catches. He also finished with six touchdowns.
But, Doubs has yet to have a 1,000-yard season during his career. And the Patriots released Stefon Diggs, who finished the 2025 season with 1,013 receiving yards, becoming the team’s first 1,000-yard receiver since 2019.
So, as Edelman said, the biggest factor is his connection with Maye, and with the offseason program right around the corner, the two will hopefully get a chance to start working together.
