FAYETTEVILLE — Two programs on similar trajectories will go head-to-head this weekend with a spot in the Women’s College World Series on the line.
Arkansas softball welcomes Duke to Bogle Park in the Fayetteville Super Regional that begin Friday, May 22. Neither team had ever reached this stage of the NCAA Tournament prior to 2018. Since then, the programs have combined for nine super regionals.
The No. 5 Razorbacks (45-11) are still searching for their super regional victory. They cruised to a 3-0 record at last weekend’s Fayetteville Regional and came one win shy of the Women’s College World Series in 2025.
The No. 12 Blue Devils (43-15) came out of the losers bracket to win the Durham Regional. Unlike Arkansas, Duke already has some winning experience at the super regionals after beating Missouri in 2024 to reach the final destination of the NCAA Tournament.
Here are three questions and one prediction for this weekend’s Fayetteville Super Regional.
Can Arkansas softball’s lineup stay hot?
The Hogs averaged 3.3 runs across their final 11 games before the regional. Leaving SEC play proved to unlock the offense as Arkansas scored 27 runs in three games.
Duke is a step-up in competition, but the Blue Devils don’t have a dominant pitcher on their staff. Cassidy Curd leads them with 146⅓ innings, but her 4.59 ERA and .251 BAA are modest numbers. Duke has four pitchers who have thrown more than 50 innings, and all of them average fewer than a strikeout per inning.
Arkansas’ bottom of the lineup did damage during the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament, and if that carries over to the super regionals, the Razorbacks will feel good about their chances.
Who wins when its strength vs strength?
Arkansas’ three-headed monster in the circle looked dominant last weekend. True freshman Saylor Timmerman (10-2, 2.82 ERA) didn’t allow a run in five innings, and she’s the No. 3 pitcher on the staff. Robyn Herron (16-6, 1.97 ERA) and Payton Burnham (13-3, 1.86 ERA) were also excellent.
That trio will have its hands full against one of the best lineups in the country. Duke ranks fifth nationally in batting average (.357), slugging percentage (.642) and home runs (113). It is 10th in runs scored (438) with five starters hitting better than .350 on the season.
Tyrina Jones is the biggest power threat with 23 home runs and 80 RBIs. She is complimented by Aminah Vega (.467/.552/.939), Jessica Oakland (.450/.517/.778) and Layla Lamar (.393/.495/.755). Those three Blue Devils have combined for 48 long balls.
Arkansas’ pitching against Duke’s hitting could define this series. The Hogs should have an advantage in the other matchup.
Can the Razorbacks stay loose amid the pressure?
Arkansas has played fearless softball throughout the season, but at some point this weekend, the weight of a first trip to Oklahoma City will cross the minds of coaches and players.
If they can brush aside that internal pressure, the Hogs should be considered the favorites to advance. Of course, there’s always an element of luck. Last year, Arkansas stumbled into misfortune with food poisoning that ruined Game 1 of the super regional against Ole Miss.
Prediction: Arkansas wins series 2-0
Arkansas’ pitching depth will end up being the difference. Duke will be able to score, but the Blue Devils won’t have an answer for a hot Hogs’ lineup. On the flip side, Deifel will be able to find some consistency in the circle, and that will push the Razorbacks to their first Women’s College World Series.
