Longtime Smyrna football coach Matt Williams has resigned and his brother, former Bulldogs offensive coordinator Mark Williams, has taken the reigns of the program, the school’s athletic department posted on X on May 27.
Matt Williams had guided the Bulldogs since 2008 and won 121 games during his tenure as head coach. Smyrna was a staple in the Class 5A/6A playoffs under Williams. The Bulldogs went 5-6 in 2026, falling in the first round of the 6A playoffs to Green Hill.
Mark Williams, who had two different stints as an assistant under Matt Williams, has head coaching experience, guiding Gallatin from 2012-18. He went 40-37 with the Green Wave before stepping down in 2018 and joining his brother’s staff at Smyrna soon after.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
