Ranger Suarez, who earned his second All-Star Game selection in three seasons, was placed on the 15-day injured list by the Boston Red Sox Thursday, July 9 with a left groin strain.
Suarez, 30, signed a five-year, $140 million deal with Boston in the offseason and was a big part of their turaround following a disastrous first month that resulted in the firing of manager Alex Cora. He’s 4-3 with a 3.15 ERA overall, but posted a 2.10 ERA over five starts from June 7 to June 29.
But in his most recent outing, Suarez exited the game after just 2 2/3 innings after covering first base, and then aggravating the injury on the subsequent pitch.
The move is retroactive to July 6, which means Suarez would be eligible for activation during the Red Sox’s second series after the All-Star break, at home against Baltimore. The Red Sox have won 10 of their last 12 games to crawl out of the AL East cellar.
