Despite being caught on camera telling Golden State Warriors fans they would land LeBron James, Steve Kerr never saw the King joining them.
Many expected James to team up with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green on the Golden State Warriors, with the latter even rejecting his player option to make room in the salary cap.
However, with LeBron joining the Philadelphia 76ers, head coach Steve Kerr has come out and said they never expected to sign him, despite saying the opposite a few weeks ago.
Steve Kerr says Golden State Warriors were not ‘realistically’ going to get LeBron James
In a conversation with ESPN’s Anthony Slater, Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr suggested that he and the Warriors didn’t expect James to join the team.
He added that the reporting on the matter led everyone outside of the team to believe they were a realistic option for them.
“I didn’t even think we were realistically in the running for LeBron. It’s just that everyone kept saying we were. It never seemed serious to me despite all the reports.”
These comments don’t exactly align with Kerr’s previous comments, where he assured a group of fans asking for LeBron James that ‘We got him.’
Perhaps it was a playful moment for Kerr, but there does seem to be a disconnect between Kerr’s previous comments and current stance on the matter.

Prior to the offseason, there was a belief that Steve Kerr would not renew his contract with the Warriors, thus leaving the team at the end of the 2025-26 NBA season.
Instead, Kerr committed to staying with the side. Now, with Kerr as head coach, along with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, the Warriors will enter the season as one of the weaker teams in the West.
Landing LeBron James in free agency was perhaps the team’s best chance of returning to championship contention.
But with that no longer being an option and with Jimmy Butler sidelined indefinitely, the Warriors are likely to have yet another middling season.
