Coming out of Luka Doncic’s minicamp a couple of weeks ago, the Los Angeles Lakers are counting down the days until they begin training camp, the preseason and the regular season. They had plenty of fun during that minicamp while also getting to know each other and building some initial chemistry on the basketball court.
A couple of other players have said that Doncic showed some very sincere and intentional leadership during that minicamp. The superstar himself gave one positive word to describe the team in a video for the Lakers’ official X (formerly Twitter) account.
“Happy!” Doncic said when asked to describe the team in one word.
That seems to align with how guard Bronny James said that the vibes surrounding the team are good. After all the fun activities the players got to participate in during Doncic’s minicamp in Slovenia, including golf, fishing, cycling, rowing and sightseeing, it shouldn’t be a surprise that everyone is feeling good right now.
Most people agree that the Lakers aren’t true championship contenders right now. But Doncic has proven in the past that he can elevate teams beyond the sum of their parts, and therefore, L.A. could very well surprise people this season, even without LeBron James.
Last season, the team went 53-29 and finished with the fourth seed in the Western Conference before getting swept in the second round of the playoffs by the Oklahoma City Thunder. When James missed the first 14 games of the season with sciatica, the squad went 10-4 as Austin Reaves averaged 28.3 points and 8.2 assists per game.
