It is time to move past the epic comeback against Ohio State and move ahead for the Texas Longhorns football team. The final non-conference tuneup before SEC play begins is the UTSA Roadrunners from down the road in San Antonio. UTSA last played Texas in 2034 at Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium, a game the Longhorns won 56-7.
These two teams actually have a common opponent. The Roadrunners played Longhorns Week 1 opponent Texas State last Saturday. UTSA won a tight game with a big fourth quarter comeback. Sound familiar?
The Roadrunners feature a veteran offense led by quarterback Owen McCown, the son of former NFL QB Josh McCown. Owen is one of the best QBs in the Group of Six, totalling 55 passing TDs and just 17 INTs the last two seasons. He’s joined in the backfield by talented sophomore Will Henderson III, who is averaging 7.6 yards/carry through two weeks.
Tommy Bresee’s Prediction
Coming off the massive win over Ohio State, this game is about not losing focus. UTSA is a veteran-led team but they have a clear weakness: defending the run. Considering the run game performance against Ohio State, Texas should be able to lean on Hollywood Smothers, Raleek Brown and Derrek Cooper en route to a comfortable win.
Owen McCown and the UTSA offense is tough to create turnovers against, but I expect Muschamp to find weaknesses and exploit them. Overall, I expect the Longhorns to finish a hectic week, filled with off-field distractions with a dominating win.
Final Score: UTSA 13, Texas 52
Trey Luerssen’s Prediction
An Ohio State hangover? Fatigue? Overconfidence? The only way the Texas Longhorns struggle in this game is if they beat themselves. While UTSA is better than Week 1 opponent Texas State, they are still a team the Longhorns should dominate if mentally UT is ready.
The question is, after proving to themselves last week that they are a legitimate, will they beat UTSA worse than Texas State, or will they let the Roadrunners hang around.
I think the game looks similar to Week 1.
