The Philadelphia Eagles needed a player at the position of tight end, and they got their man. Zach Ertz has rejoined the Eagles after spending over four seasons away from the Eagles. It is great news for the Eagles since one of their tight ends, Dallas Goedert, was injured during the match against the Tennessee Titans.
For the head coach of the Eagles, Nick Sirianni, the signing of Ertz goes beyond having another player on the team. Sirianni has worked with Ertz during part of 2021, and he has mentioned that Ertz has made an impression on him.

Speaking on September 22, on 94.1 WIP, Sirianni explained why there was so much excitement inside the organization about bringing Ertz back.
“Lot of excitement to bring Zach back. I got to spend time early in my time here. Not the entire season but really liked the person. The player is legendary in everything he’s done. Always thought he was a good teammate, good person.”

That personal connection gives Sirianni another reason to welcome Ertz back into the building. The Eagles head coach already had experience with him before Ertz left the Eagles for the Arizona Cardinals in 2021, and now the two are set to work together again.
Ertz’s return also comes at a time when the Eagles have a clear need at the position. Goedert is expected to miss multiple weeks after his knee injury, while rookie Eli Stowers is already on injured reserve. Johnny Mundt and EJ Jenkins are the other tight ends currently available, leaving the Eagles with a much different group than the one they expected to have when the season began.
Ertz was reportedly hoping for a reunion, and he didn’t hide his emotions after landing with the Eagles on Tuesday morning. He told reporters that returning to the Eagles was something he had always viewed as a possibility because of his connections with the organization.
There is still a football question hanging over the reunion. Ertz is coming off an ACL tear suffered last December while playing for the Washington Commanders. Before the injury, he recorded 50 catches for 504 yards.
Ertz said his knee is in a “great spot,” however, he also made it clear that he is not expecting anything to be handed to him. He will earn his spot when he returns to play. The veteran, who is going into his second Eagles run, will start out on the practice squad for now, but an elevation to the active roster might come before the Week 3 match against the Chicago Bears on Monday night.
For Sirianni, it will mean having a known and respected veteran around. Time will tell whether he can contribute to the team or not, but what is clear is that the Eagles reunion is far more meaningful to him than the tight end signing.
