Sophie Cunningham had a milestone to celebrate Tuesday night. The Indiana Fever had a more immediate reason to celebrate: a 96-77 victory over the Minnesota Lynx that looked like the kind of performance they want to carry into the playoffs.
Cunningham scored 11 points in Indiana’s final regular-season home game, including three 3-pointers. Her ninth point took her past 2,000 for her WNBA career. The number recognizes years of work across more than one team, but the timing made it especially satisfying. Indiana needed a response after a loss to Washington, and Cunningham helped provide one against a Minnesota team near the top of the standings.
She did it without needing to dominate the ball. Cunningham went 4-for-7 from the field and 3-for-6 from deep, adding two rebounds and two assists. Those are useful numbers on a roster led by Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell. The Fever have scorers who can draw a defense toward them. Cunningham gives those players somewhere productive to send the ball when that defense shifts.
Why Cunningham’s shooting matters in October
The Fever’s attack can change quickly when an opponent has to respect the perimeter. Clark’s passing creates open looks, but those possessions only hurt a defense if someone finishes them. Cunningham made Minnesota pay from outside Tuesday.
That does not mean one game settles Indiana’s playoff questions. It does show how a complementary player can change the shape of a matchup. If Cunningham hits open threes, defenders have a harder choice: stay home with her or give Clark and Mitchell more room to work.

Fever Brought The Defense
Indiana’s game coverage described a team that found its defensive edge, too. That combination matters more than any individual scoring total. The Fever did not have to rely on one player rescuing a stagnant offense while the other end of the court leaked points.
Cunningham’s milestone deserves its moment. Reaching 2,000 career points is a substantial achievement. The more interesting question for Indiana is what her latest 11 points might foreshadow. A playoff defense will make Clark and Mitchell work. Cunningham showed Tuesday that leaving her alone carries a cost.
