The San Francisco 49ers are bringing in more reinforcements on their defensive line. Veteran pass rusher Matt Judon is due to sign with San Francisco according to an interview he did with All32’s Arabia Tillery.
Tillery reported Judon had a workout with the 49ers on Saturday and will officially sign with the club Monday. It’s unclear whether he’ll be joining via the practice squad or the 53-man roster.
Judon in his interview explained how injuries played a role in him joining the 49ers.
“With all of the injuries piling up over there I think I can just come in and help until some of those guys get back,” Judon said. “I know the D-line coach. I know him well. He’s a great D-line coach.”
San Francisco entered Week 3 down multiple defensive linemen on the ends and on the interior. DEs Romello Height and Nick Bosa were both out Sunday, along with defensive tackle James Thompson Jr. Height may be back in Week 4, but the others are expected to miss multiple weeks.
During Sunday’s game the 49ers pass rush struggled to consistently get after Arizona Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett, so Judon should have an opportunity to work his way into a defensive role. His familiarity with defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, who was the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons when he was there in 2024, should help him adapt quickly.
“(Raheem) is a big ol’ kid,” Judon said. “And he loves the game of football and he knows a lot about it. I feel that we didn’t get a long enough tenure together, or stint together. And so, just his energy and his love and passion for the game.”
Judon’s last productive year was with Morris in 2024. That season he put up 5.5 sacks in 17 games. Last season he played in 14 games with the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills without recording a sack.
In 10 seasons Judon has played in 145 games with 100 starts. He has 72 sacks and 95 tackles for loss in his career. He could quickly become an important piece of a banged up 49ers defensive line if they’re going to stay afloat until they get healthy.
