Inter Miami fans were left frustrated after Lionel Messi’s stunning free-kick was cancelled out by a stoppage-time winner as Columbus Crew secured a dramatic 2-1 victory.
Messi had produced another outrageous finish from a tight angle to level the game, but Jamal Thiare struck in the 98th minute to give Columbus all three points.
Miami also finished the match with 10 men after Santiago Morales was sent off deep into stoppage time. The defeat left supporters questioning the performance around their star man.
Inter Miami fans react after Messi goal counts for nothing
Messi’s free-kick was arguably the highlight of the night, but fans were quick to point out that his brilliance was not enough to rescue Inter Miami.
One supporter summed up the frustration by writing: “All that freekick was for nothing 😭”
Another was far more direct about what they believed the team needed, saying: “Buy defenders and goal keeper stop being stupid and wasting my goat effort”
The criticism extended to the wider performance, with one fan writing: “I keep getting angry watching this team playing so bad, is the management of inter Miami not embarrass with the nonsense these players are playing sign good players and good defender. The playing style of this team is really bad”
Another supporter offered a more measured assessment of the changes being made, writing:
“Okay I love what the new manager trying to change things up but try to pick out the better players in training please. The goalkeeper was a surprise change for me. The change for Berterame and Falcon was absolutley necessary. Rest Suarez once in a while.”
There were also calls for greater transparency around injuries.
“Please make adjustments. This is brutal. And can we please get injury reports? As fans, we’re completely in the dark about injuries, how serious they are, and when we can expect players to return. The refs tonight also need to be investigated.”
Another fan summed up the concern with: “It’s ridiculous atp without Messi they don’t even score a goal”
One supporter added: “Messi’s all effort got wasted because the whole team could not perform properly”
There was also criticism of the influence surrounding Messi, with one fan writing: “Word of advice…just because someone is Messi’s friend or they speak Spanish doesn’t mean they should play or be the coach”
Another simply posted: “Messi only cares about goals and assists not winning games 😭”
For Inter Miami, the attention now turns to fixing the issues around Messi after another match where his individual brilliance could not prevent a late defeat.
