The San Francisco 49ers have quickly established themselves as one of the NFL’s biggest stories through the opening three weeks of the 2026 season. With an undefeated record and an offense producing at a high level despite significant injuries, San Francisco has made a major jump in the latest power rankings.
The 49ers improved to 3-0 after defeating the Arizona Cardinals 36-30 in a divisional battle that tested their ability to finish games. Brock Purdy continued to lead an efficient offense, while San Francisco’s ability to overcome injuries at wide receiver has made its unbeaten start even more notable.

National evaluations have reflected the team’s strong opening month, with several power rankings placing San Francisco near the top of the league. The 49ers have moved ahead of several established contenders because of their combination of offensive production, consistency and an ability to win despite obstacles.
Purdy has been central to that success, particularly with the team’s receiving corps dealing with injuries. His strong decision-making and efficiency have allowed the offense to remain productive, while the offensive line has provided the quarterback with enough time to operate effectively.
San Francisco 49ers Rise to Second Place in Latest NFL Power Rankings

Purdy and company have taken the second spot in the latest power rankings. This can be seen in an analysis by Nick Wagoner for ESPN.
Week 3 result: Beat the Cardinals 36-30
Week 3 ranking: 3Fantasy surprise: TE George Kittle
Under normal circumstances, it would not be a surprise to see Kittle as the TE4 in fantasy. But given that he tore his right Achilles on Jan. 11 and missed all of training camp, that he returned in Week 1 close to his usual self is a testament to his passion for the game. And the Niners have needed every bit of his production to help weather the storm of injuries elsewhere. Kittle ranks fifth among all tight ends in receiving yards (174), 11th in receptions (12) and tied for first in touchdowns (three).
There are still questions that San Francisco will need to answer as the schedule becomes more demanding. Injuries remain a concern, and the defense has not always produced the same level of dominance expected from a championship-caliber team, meaning the 49ers will face tougher tests as the season progresses.
For now, however, the undefeated start has placed San Francisco firmly in the NFL’s contender conversation. With the 49ers preparing to face the Denver Broncos in Week 4, another strong performance could further strengthen their position near the top of the league’s power rankings.
