In the MLB playoffs, finding a way to score is the most important thing. The Milwaukee Brewers have certainly taken that to heart. With the Brewers down by one, 2-1, with just one out in the top of the fifth and two runners in scoring position, Jackson Chourio, the hero of Game 2, popped up to left field.
This did not seem to be a deep enough ball to drive in Cooper Pratt, the Brewers’ man at third base, especially with Padres left fielder Dustin Harris closing in on the baseball. Pratt, however, did not care at all. He chose to tag up still, prompting a throw from Harris. The Brewers rookie ended up beating out that throw to the plate to tie the game for Milwaukee in exciting fashion.

Sure, the ball from Chourio went to the outfield, so it’s not like it was impossible for Pratt to score. However, it was in shallow outfield, and it’s not like Harris dilly-dallied when it came to throwing the ball back to the infield. It’s a testament to Pratt’s speed that he was able to score a run for the Brewers as they kept in step with a Padres team that is a different animal at home.
This was also a ballsy play from the rookie, who had his moments earlier in the season when his hustle was questioned. Brewers manager Pat Murphy pulled Pratt from a regular-season game after he seemingly failed to hustle on a bloop single, and the 22-year-old rookie appears to have taken all the lessons he got from that saga to heart as well.
The most difficult game to win in a playoff series is the closeout game, and the Brewers know it. Every run matters, and Pratt’s hustle could prove to be all the more important should Milwaukee once again pull off some heroics in the ninth after the Padres regained the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the fifth with a Jake Cronenworth home run.
