LeBron James has shared his immediate reaction to making his Philadelphia 76ers debut, admitting that adjusting to his new surroundings has been a process but insisting things are getting better.
James made his first appearance for the Sixers on Thursday night against the Brooklyn Nets as Philadelphia unveiled its new-look starting five for the first time.
The 41-year-old recorded 10 points, five assists and four rebounds in 18 minutes. He made his only field-goal attempt and converted all eight of his free throws as the Sixers led 58-56 at half-time before eventually losing 114-108.
LeBron James opens up on his first game with the 76ers
James joined Philadelphia on a two-year deal this summer after spending eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers. He is now preparing for a record-extending 24th NBA season.
The first game gave fans a glimpse of what James could bring to a talented Sixers lineup featuring Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown and VJ Edgecombe.
Rather than carrying the scoring load, James spent much of his time orchestrating the offence and finished the first half with five assists.
Speaking after the game, James admitted the move has required an adjustment but said the environment around him has made that process easier.
“Every day is getting better. I’m gonna have some days where days will be better than others. I get to the facility when I’m on these guys, it definitely helps,” James said.
He added, “We got good energy, good spirit, obviously the basketball game what it brings to all of us is a sense of like togetherness and fun. It’s fun to go to work…when I’m around these guys, locker room, plane rides, practices and the facility things, that definitely helps.”
That positive feeling comes after James had already spent time building chemistry with his new teammates during training camp.
The Sixers have two pre-season games remaining against the Boston Celtics before their regular-season opener against the New York Knicks on October 20.
