GREEN BAY − The Green Bay Packers backfield depth is getting thinner.
Running back Chris Brooks, the team’s primary pass protector at his position, is being placed on injured reserve. Brooks had a 27-yard carry last week before injuring his ankle in a win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Brooks has essentially played in a fullback spot for the Packers since 2024. With Josh Jacobs on the NFL commissioner’s exempt list, Brooks has gotten an elevated role in the run game. He has 70 yards on 15 carries this season and, unlike MarShawn Lloyd and Kaleb Johnson, has not fumbled.
Brooks’ 4.7-yard average is best among running backs. None of the running backs has scored a rushing touchdown through four games.
The Packers elevated running back Pierre Strong Jr. to the active 53-man roster from the practice squad earlier this week. Strong, Lloyd and Johnson will not share the workload for a run game that ranks last in the NFL.
