The Denver Broncos picked up a big win on Thursday night, beating the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks 17-14 in overtime. But quarterback Bo Nix had very little to do with it, and one former NFL quarterback was not happy about it.
During Prime Video’s postgame coverage of Thursday night’s game, Ryan Fitzpatrick tore into Nix’s performance, questioning the third-year quarterback’s effort and saying that he’s taking the position “for granted.”
Broncos Win Despite Nix
Denver’s defense carried the load against Seattle. Ja’Quan McMillian intercepted Sam Darnold on the Seahawks’ opening drive of overtime, and Wil Lutz followed with a 53-yard field goal to win it.
Nix, meanwhile, struggled to get anything going. He completed 17 of 27 passes for just 107 yards, with no touchdowns and no interceptions, finishing with a 71.1 passer rating.
While Nix didn’t make many glaring mistakes, he also didn’t necessarily do anything to put his team in a position to be successful, either.
The Broncos may have scored more points and won the game, but the offense managed just 168 total yards, while Seattle put up 353.
‘That right there is garbage’
Despite the win, it was not a strong performance from Nix, and Fitzpatrick didn’t hold back on the performance.
“Bo Nix is not playing competitively,” Fitzpatrick said via Pro Football Talk. “It’s almost disrespectful to the quarterback position how he’s playing quarterback right now. … He has no trust from his coach, he calls a screen play on third and eight.
“Now they’re in the locker room right now, they’re excited. They won. He’s not playing competitive football right now,” Fitzpatrick continued. “I can only imagine how Sean Payton feels. I mean, Sean Payton, [offensive coordinator] Davis Webb, everybody that blocks for him. He’s not competing right now. And that’s something that he’s hung his hat on for the last two years,” he continued. “I don’t know if he’s still injured. I don’t know what’s going on. But it’s not good enough. It’s effort.”
Fitzpatrick was given another chance to elaborate on his point later in the show, and he took the opportunity to double down on his previous comments.
“Well, there’s no fire and there’s no passion,” Fitzpatrick said. “And that doesn’t mean you’ve got to be yelling at guys on the sideline or inspiring in the huddle. You can do it with your play as well. And I just don’t see it.”
“And I just think that he needs to be sat down and they need to tell him being a quarterback in the NFL is a very special thing. And right now he’s taking it for granted. He is,” he added. “And there’s a lot of guys that have played this game that watch that game that think, ‘That right there is garbage. That effort is garbage. That is not a quarterback in the NFL. We deserve better.’”
Nix and the Broncos were good enough to get a win in Thursday night’s game, but it’s clear that Nix and the offense have a long way to go.
