Atletico Madrid substitute Alex Baena scored at the death to lift them to a 1-0 LaLiga victory at Espanyol.
The visitors were relentless in the first half, but it was the hosts who nearly broke the deadlock when Leandro Cabrera caught the crossbar late on.
Atletico replacement Marcos Llorente clipped the goal frame after the break before fellow substitute Julian Alvarez – who had just been denied – teed up Baena for the 89th-minute winner.
There was an early chance for Juventus loanee Jonathan David, who struck just over the crossbar in the sixth minute.
Roberto Fernandez tried to nod the hosts in front before David came even closer from the right, but Fortuno was alert, sticking an arm out to deny the Canada striker.
The hosts’ best chance of the first half came late on, when Cabrera rushed forward to meet a loose ball from a cross, bending it towards Jan Oblak, who rose to meet it, but the Uruguayan’s effort clipped the bar.
Diego Simeone made a number of second-half substitutions, and came even closer just after the hour when one of them, Llorente, struck from range, but Fortuno was able to leap just high enough to tip it over.
The Espanyol keeper tipped over another late effort from Alvarez, who then earned the assist for the winner from a squared pass to Baena.
He curled it stylishly into the top corner with one minute remaining in normal time, and a stoppage-time save by Jan Oblak from a Marcos Fernandez effort preserved all three points.
