RB Leipzig midfielder Nicolas Seiwald knows his team cannot afford to dwell on its crushing defeat against Bayern Munich, especially with another difficult fixture approaching. However, his assessment of Leipzig’s performance makes clear that there are serious issues to address.
“We saw that we were inferior in all areas from the start. We need to come to terms with that quickly, because we go again on Wednesday and the opponents don’t get any easier. We know we did a lot wrong today, but it doesn’t help to tear yourselves apart. We need to learn from it and push on,” Seiwald said (as captured by FCBayern.com).
Seiwald’s comments capture the difficult balance Leipzig must strike after such a disappointing performance. The players need to acknowledge how badly things went without allowing one defeat to destroy their confidence heading into the next match.
Still, recognizing the problems is only the first step. Leipzig were second-best in their individual duels, struggled to control Bayern’s attacking movements, and failed to execute their plans consistently. Those shortcomings cannot simply be brushed aside because another game is approaching.
For Bayern Munich, the performance was a reminder of the team’s potential when its intensity and technical quality combine. Leipzig’s inability to compete across the pitch allowed Vincent Kompany’s side to dictate the game almost entirely.
Seiwald is right that Leipzig must move forward, but the lessons from this defeat need to translate into tangible improvements. Otherwise, the same problems could surface again when they face another high-level opponent.
Bayern have set the standard. Leipzig must now work out how to respond.
