Benfica manager José Mourinho has claimed he was sent off during his side’s 1–0 defeat to Real Madrid CF after accusing the referee of refusing to book three Madrid players.
Mourinho named the players as Aurelien Tchouameni, Carreras and Dean Huijsen.
According to him, the referee was aware that issuing yellow cards to the trio would have ruled them out of the Champions League play off second leg at the Bernabeu.
When asked about his red card, Mourinho said it was not related to a potential second yellow card for Vinicius Junior.
“It wasn’t about Vinicius’ second yellow. No. I was sent off because I said something very clear,” he said.
“The referee had a note that basically said Tchouameni, Carreras and Huijsen cannot get a yellow card because they would have missed the second leg.
“I told him that I have spent 1,400 games on the touchline, and he knew exactly who he was allowed to book and who he was not.”
Mourinho’s comments came after Benfica’s narrow defeat, with the Portuguese manager insisting his dismissal followed his remarks to the referee over the handling of disciplinary decisions during the match.
