Georgia baseball robs go-ahead home run from Tennessee — who had already started celebrating

Georgia defeated Tennessee in SEC play on Sunday after a catch at the wall abruptly brought the game to an end — much to the chagrin of the Volunteers, who had already started celebrating.

At the top of the ninth inning, with two out and down on run, Tennessee pinch hitter Stone Lawless had a chance to save the game with a much-needed lead. And he took it: On the second pitch, Lawless connected with the ball, sending it flying into deep right field, and towards the fence for a two-run go-ahead home run.

One problem: It wasn’t a home run. As the ball arced towards the wall, Georgia outfielder Cole Johnson was there to nab it. The fly out was the third and final out for the Volunteers, with the Bulldogs ending the game right then and there.

The result was a little extra awkward for Lawless, who had already slammed his bat to the ground in victory, pointing to the dugout in celebration of his grand accomplishment. Teammate Jay Abernathy, on deck at the time, could be seen jumping and yelling in delight.

Instead, the game was just…over. The Bulldogs won, 8-7.

Georgia’s win capped off a three-game home series against Tennessee over the weekend. Though the Volunteers took the first game of the series, the Bulldogs went on to win 4-2 on Saturday before picking up the one-run win on Sunday.

Georgia entered the week ranked No. 8 in the NCAA’s Top 25, while Tennessee was ranked No. 19.
