The Justin Fields era has officially reached its end in New York, as the Jets intend to trade the veteran quarterback to Kansas City Chiefs, Adam Schefter reported on Monday.

Fields was just one year into the two-year, $40 million contract he signed just last offseason. According to the Athletic’s Zach Rosenblatt, Fields would incur a $22 million dead cap hit and save the Jets only $1 million against the cap if released.
Last season, Fields threw for 1,259 yards, 7 touchdowns and 1 interception in nine starts, leading the team to a 2-7 record. The 26-year-old quarterback also added 383 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.
Fields was in and out of the lineup during his time with the Jets. Fields’ concussion in Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills opened the door for veteran Tyrod Taylor to start at quarterback for the Jets. Taylor started in Week 3 before Fields returned in Week 4. Fields was then benched for Taylor in Week 7, but after Taylor suffered a knee injury, Fields made his way back into the starting lineup.
Once healthy, Taylor took over as the Jets’ starter again in Week 12, while Fields finished the year on injured reserve after suffering a knee injury late in the season. Undrafted rookie quarterback Brady Cook, who had previously been on the practice squad, finished the season as the Jets’ starting quarterback due to the injuries at the position. The Jets’ offense ranked last in passing yards, tied for last in passing touchdowns and 29th in total yards last season.
Fields will now look for his third team in as many seasons. He split time with Russell Wilson as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting quarterback during the 2024-25 season before succeeding Aaron Rodgers with the Jets the following year. Fields spent his first three years with the Chicago Bears after being selected with the 11th overall pick out of Ohio State in 2021, before eventually being replaced by Caleb Williams.
