J.D. Martinez hasn’t officially announced his retirement from his MLB playing career, but the former Boston Red Sox All-Star designated hitter is reportedly making a big career move.
“Sources: The Mets are hiring J.D. Martinez as a special adviser to baseball operations,” Red Sox beat reporter Tim Healey of The Boston Globe posted on X. “It’ll be a role similar to Carlos Beltran’s, including time with/around the players in the clubhouse, on the field, etc. Martinez last played when he was with the Mets in 2024.”

Martinez spent five seasons with Boston from 2018 to 2022, making four AL All-Star teams and winning one World Series title.
He had the best year of his career in 2018, setting high marks with an MLB-leading 130 RBIs and 358 total bases, as well as runs scored (111), hits (188), batting average (.330) and on-base percentage (.402). Martinez finished fourth in the AL MVP voting and helped the Red Sox win the World Series that season.
The former 20th-round draft pick signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in December 2022, spent one campaign in the NL West and last played in 2024 with the Mets.
