University of Michigan‘s head basketball coach Dusty May is helping bring the maize and blue to the March Madness Final Four.
On April 4, the Michigan Wolverines will face off against the Arizona Wildcats in the national semifinal game of the 2026 NCAA Tournament.
Dusty is the men’s basketball coach for University of Michigan, but he isn’t the only one in his family who can be found on the court — his three sons have also followed in his footsteps into the sport.
Dusty has been passionate about basketball for most of his life, but another lifelong relationship is with his wife, Anna May (née Nonte), whom he first met in elementary school and started dating in high school.

Dusty and Anna met in first grade, and later became high school sweethearts

Dusty and Anna originally met in first grade as classmates at Eastern Greene Elementary School in Greene County, Ind., per Sports Illustrated.
Dusty and Anna were in elementary school together, but they didn’t start dating until high school, when they were 15.
According to NCAA.com, as teenagers, Dusty played basketball and ran cross-country, while Anna was a cheerleader.
In college, they dated long distance: Dusty attended Oakland City University, before transferring to Indiana University, and Anna went to Purdue.
They married in 2000

Dusty and Anna wed in 2000, the same year he graduated from Indiana University.
“I don’t remember a time when I didn’t love Dusty and have feelings for Dusty,” Anna told Sports Illustrated in March 2023.
Anna is an occupational therapist
Anna graduated from Purdue University, and works as an occupational therapist, according to CBS Sports.
In an interview on the Burning Sage college basketball podcast (via 247Sports), Dusty explained how after Purdue, Anna “ended up in Indianapolis, IU School of Medicine, an OT school, which is only 45 minutes from Bloomington.”
“And then she took a job. Her clinicals were in Galveston, Texas,” he continued. “I moved to L.A. and then when she was done, she joined me in L.A. And because of that, we were able to get an apartment in Santa Monica. And the rest is history.”

Dusty and Anna are the parents to three sons: Jack, Charlie and Eli.
Basketball is a top priority for the May family, with Charlie telling Hour Detroit in November 2025, “Most of our lives revolve around basketball.”
“Holidays like Thanksgiving, we’re traveling to where games are. Christmas, we have maybe three days off,” he continued.
Dusty’s children are all involved with college basketball

Dusty coaches basketball, but his sons have also become involved with the sport.
Jack was a walk-on guard for the Florida Gators from 2020 to 2024. After playing basketball in college, Jack is now a video room intern for the Miami Heat, per the NBA.
Charlie was a walk-on at University of Central Florida, but transferred to University of Michigan to play under his dad for his senior year.
“Man, it’s been an awesome experience,” Charlie told MLive in March 2026. “Just being here with my family and just being at the University of Michigan, it’s something my family loves and I’m very grateful for it.”
Eli is also a Wolverine, working as a student manager for the basketball team, per USA Today. Eli followed in the footsteps of Dusty, who was also a student manager, under Bob Knight at Indiana University.
