The Marquette women’s basketball team entered the season in the rare position of retaining every player from the year before.
This off-season is different. Head coach Cara Consuegra has a lot of work to do.
First, the Golden Eagles honored seven players on Senior Day because they were are out of college eligibility.
Since then, MU has seen four players enter the NCAA transfer portal. The biggest blow came on April 6 when 6-foot-3 star forward Skylar Forbes entered the portal with one season of eligibility remaining. The news was first reported by On3.com.
Forbes has long been seen as a potential pro player, and she averaged 15.5 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. She also led the Big East at 1.8 blocks per game to earn all-league first-team accolades.
Forbes played one season for former coach Megan Duffy, then stuck around to play for Consuegra for two seasons. Forbes missed a game this season for personal reasons, and also came off the bench for five games. Consuegra said that she wanted Forbes to watch the flow of the game before entering.
Forbes will likely be an in-demand player in the portal.
Also entering the portal from MU: junior forward Jada Bediako, who averaged 2.3 points per game, senior forward Aryelle Stevens, who missed the season with an Achilles injury, and junior forward Charia Smith, who averaged 3.3 points per game.
As of April 6, the Golden Eagles have only five players projected to be on next season’s roster: Halle Vice, Jordan Meulemans, Kameron Herring, JJ Barnes and Se’Crette Carter.
