Tyson Fury returns from his latest hiatus in the heavyweight division when he faces Arslanbek Makhmudov in a scheduled 12-rounder at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.
By Fury’s own estimation, this is his fifth return from retirement, and it certainly can be hard to keep track.
Since he last laced gloves for the second of his competitive points defeats to unified champion Oleksandr Usyk, the heavyweight division has moved on just fine without ‘The Gypsy King’.
Fabio Wardley and Daniel Dubois will meet in an all-British clash for the former’s WBO title in Manchester next month, while Moses Itauma’s star continues to rise.
As such, Fury is fighting to justify his place at the table and to keep ambitions such as a long-awaited showdown with Anthony Joshua and a desired third crack at Usyk on track.
If the 37-year-old has not slipped significantly during his absence, he should have too much for Makhmudov, a dangerously destructive puncher but a fighter with questions over his stamina and chin.
On the other hand, almost all great former heavyweight champions have lost fights they wouldn’t previously have lost when they couldn’t manage to stay away. You sense such ignominy is coming for Fury soon enough, even if it is not this weekend.

Round 6: At the halfway stage, Fury is in complete control. It’s beginning to look like he’s dragging this one out, knowing his opponent will continue to walk onto shots in the hope of a KO.
Round 5: Fury’s corner call for “patience” after another attritional round. Fury caught Makhmudov with a left hook there that Anthony Joshua at ringside filmed on his phone. A bit of research, there…?
Round 4: Fury has used his reach well to keep Makhmudov at bay, but he finds a gap in the Brit’s defence early in Round 4. Then, WHAM — there goes the swift right hand, leaving the Russian a little shaken. He’s still swinging for the fences, but at the bell, he’s left shaking his head side to side as though trying to get rid of the ringing in his ears.
Round 3: With 30 seconds of the round left, we get the first grin from Fury. Makhmudov clearly hoped to spring a surprise with an early knockout; now that Fury has figured him out, his lack of a Plan B is becoming obvious.
Round 2: Makhumdov clearly doesn’t see this going the distance. He comes in swinging like Bart Simpson twirling his arms in Lisa’s bedroom. Fury starts sussing out the attack and lands a couple of counters. He’s getting a read on the Russian.
Round 1: Fury, wearing black and blue with ‘R.I.P. Ricky’ on his belt, seems shaken by Makhmudov’s aggressive start. It looks like he has a small cut to his cheek. Nothing really to split them there.
4:54 p.m.: Makhmudov makes a slow, deliberate walk to the ring as an air-raid siren blares out. And here comes Fury, whose entrance is marked by an emotional tribute to Ricky Hatton.
4:51 p.m.: In the co-main event, Conor Benn claims a dominant decision win over Regis Prograis.
