Even Carlos Ulberg’s peers couldn’t believe what they watched Saturday night at UFC 327.
Fighting on one leg after suffering an apparent blown-out knee, Ulberg scored one of the greatest finishes you’ll ever see, knocking out Jiri Prochazka with a Hail Mary punch to capture the vacant UFC light heavyweight title in the most improbable way imaginable.
In terms of come-from-behind performances where a fighter snatches victory from the jaws of defeat, few among UFC history stand up to what Ulberg just pulled off against a former champion like Prochazka, who carries a well-deserved reputation as one of the division’s most dangerous strikers.
“I blew out my knee, but I never, ever counted myself out,” Ulberg said in the cage after his win. “I knew that all I need was that one shot, and I ended up getting it.
“I’ve got to sort this knee out, but I’m a world champion.”
The abrupt result left not only Prochazka dumbfounded, but also countless fighters on the UFC roster, many of whom hailed Ulberg’s work — and Prochazka’s failure to capitalize — as a lesson in why it’s never wise to let your foot off the gas in a high-level fist-fight.
“You can learn things through direct or indirect experience,” tweeted bantamweight contender Aiemann Zahabi, who fights Sean O’Malley on the upcoming UFC White House card. “Tonight, every fighter on the roster learned the same lesson. “

The great @BrianSuttererMD just told me he believes Ulberg tore his ACL.
I asked how he knew:
“The shin popped forward and then the calf rippling you saw was it shifting back into place.“
He is working on a breakdown video right now.
Just an unbelievable turn of events.

Despite all of his experience Jiri is apparently only now understanding that you can’t let a hurt fighter off the hook during a world championship fight. 🤦🏻♂️
