Much has been made recently about how the Jacksonville Jaguars will utilize Travis Hunter this season.
Ian Rapoport mentioned last week, echoing a report from earlier this offseason from Cameron Wolfe, that Hunter would be a “full-time” wide receiver and a “part-time” cornerback.
Hunter would then respond on X to Rapoport, saying, “Now who told you this?”
Now, while appearing on the Pat McAfee Show, ESPN’s Adam Schefter is sharing what he’s hearing.
“It’s middle of April, and there’s a lot of ways this can go, but here’s the way I expect it to go right now: he is going to have his snaps at cornerback spike this year,” Schefter said. “So it was 162 snaps on defense last year, 324 on offense — he’s still going to play offense too. I can tell you that the plans are to use him at wide receiver again, just the way they did last year, and to have his spike snaps at the cornerback position and that’s why they gave up multiple picks to go get Travis Hunter, is to have the luxury to be able to play him at both spots, and if you need him at a certain spot, to insert him at that spot.”

The first part of Shefter’s comment is important, which is his emphasizing that things can change. Since drafting Hunter, while the Jaguars have had a detailed plan for him, the team has remained fluid and quick to adjust as well. What the roster looks like on a given week, or who the opponent is, can dictate playing time. To Schefter’s point, that’s the luxury of drafting Hunter.
Where we sit right now, one can see why there are reports of Hunter seeing more snaps at cornerback this year compared to last. With Greg Newsome leaving in free agency, the starting spot opposite of Montaric Brown is available. While on offense, the Jaguars still have Jakobi Meyers, Parker Washington, and Brian Thomas Jr.
If Hunter does see more snaps at cornerback, he will also continue to play wideout. The Jaguars have not wavered in their belief that he can be an impact player on both sides of the ball.
