New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe will begin his rehab assignment at Double-A Somerset on Tuesday night.
Volpe underwent offseason surgery to repair a partially torn labrum, an injury that could have impacted his performance on the field in 2025. The soon-to-be 25-year-old hit just .212/.272/.391 with a .663 OPS in 153 games last season.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman recently said the plan is for Volpe to receive 55 at-bats in the minors before rejoining the Major League club.
However, Volpe’s first plate appearances of the year will be against a tough opponent. Philadelphia Phillies ace Zack Wheeler takes the mound for Double-A Reading, making his fourth start in his rehab process.

The three-time All-Star is working his way back from surgery for venous thoracic outlet syndrome, which abruptly ended his season this past August. Wheeler posted a 5.23 ERA and allowed a combined nine hits in his three outings, but the Phillies aren’t focused on results.
After missing spring training, facing a pitcher of Wheeler’s caliber will be a good first test for Volpe. The Yankees will be patient with the shortstop’s progress.
