Jarrell Chandler, a four-star safety out of Halls High School in Tennessee, is set to announce his commitment on May 18, with Tennessee, Clemson, Miami, and Vanderbilt still in the mix. On paper, Tennessee should probably feel comfortable. Chandler is the in-state number one prospect; he is one of the top safeties in the 2027 class and the Vols have been right in the middle of his recruitment for a while now.
But as decision day looms, Tennessee seems to be getting further and further away from their blue-chip native safety.
On3’s Chad Simmons still has his odds on the Vols to pull through, but even his latest intel did not exactly sound like a locked door. Simmons wrote that Tennessee is still battling to keep Chandler home, while Clemson and Miami have made the race “very interesting” late. He also noted that there is “not a lot of confidence” in his Tennessee pick, with Miami remaining a big name and Clemson picking up momentum down the stretch.
Vanderbilt is in the final group, but this does not feel like a Vanderbilt-centered race by any means. Tennessee is still the local threat, and ignoring the Vols would be dumb, but the noise around Clemson and Miami makes this feel more like a late fight between two schools trying to pull him away from the expected path.

Chandler is listed by 247Sports at 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, which gives him a more filled-out frame than a lot of safeties in this class. He is not built like a smaller, center-field defensive back. He looks closer to the kind of hybrid safety who can roll down, tackle near the box, and still move around in coverage.
Chandler totaled 94 tackles, six tackles for loss, eight pass breakups, three forced fumbles, one interception, and one fumble recovery on defense in his junior year. He also caught 42 passes for 691 yards and seven touchdowns on offense.
The most interesting part of this recruitment might be how differently Clemson and Miami are pitching him. Simmons noted that Miami is recruiting Chandler as a linebacker, while Clemson is recruiting him as a safety. That is a pretty important difference because it is not just about which logo he likes better. It is about what kind of player he wants to become.
Miami’s pitch makes sense if Chandler sees himself eventually growing into a modern linebacker role, the type of defender who can run, cover space, and still be closer to the action. Clemson’s pitch feels cleaner if he wants to keep the safety label and be used as a bigger defensive back who can move around instead of being boxed into one spot. Personally, that is why the Clemson fit is easy to see. Chandler has the size to play physically, but his ball skills, offensive production, and movement ability make him more interesting if you keep him flexible.
That is the part I’m selling if I’m Clemson. Do not turn him into a generic linebacker too early. Let him roll down, cover tight ends, play in space, and become the kind of defensive chess piece every good defense is trying to find now. A 6-foot-3 safety with that kind of production is not an everyday occurrence, and Clemson has a chance to pitch him on being used like something more creative than just another box defender.

Tennessee still may end up being the pick, and Miami is clearly not some side character either. But with Chandler a day away from announcing, this has gotten a lot more interesting than a simple in-state commitment story. Clemson has pushed itself into the conversation late, and if the Tigers can pull this off, it would be the most satisfying defensive recruiting win of the cycle after a healthy amount of disappointment thus far.
