Former Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Stetson Bennett got more competition for the backup spot on the Los Angeles Rams behind NFL MVP Matthew Stafford this offseason. The Rams shocked the NFL when they drafted quarterback Ty SImpson in the first round of the 2026 NFL draft.
Simpson isn’t guaranteed to be the backup to Stafford. He’ll have to compete for Bennett, who has three years of experience in the Rams’ scheme.
“(Rams coach) Sean McVay said after Simpson was drafted that he’ll compete with Bennett for the backup job, which wasn’t just the coach humbling his rookie quarterback,” Cameron DaSilva of Rams Wire wrote. “It’s the truth.”
The Rams will only find out so much during OTAs (organized team activities). Training camp and the preseason will probably be where the Rams decide their backup quarterback competition, but the competition starts now for Bennett and Simpson.
The Rams are well-known for not playing starters much during the preseason, but we expect that Los Angeles will play Bennett a lot as usual and give Simpson some action since he is a rookie.
“The Rams offense is a complex one to learn and it could take Simpson some time to grasp,” DaSilva continued. “As Simpson settles in with his new team, look for Bennett to remain the QB2 behind Stafford for the time being.”
This year presents a huge opportunity for Bennett to climb the Rams’ quarterback depth chart since NFL veteran Jimmy Garoppolo is no longer with the team. But Bennett has to hold off Ty Simpson, who the Rams obviously like a lot since they spent a first-round pick on him.
