The first step on the road to Omaha for Tennessee and East Carolina comes Friday as they open the NCAA baseball Chapel Hill regional.
Both programs have a long track record of postseason success, with the Vols winning the College World Series just two years ago. The Pirates are NCAA tournament perennials but have never made it to Omaha and will renew their long-running quest starting Friday.
The Vols were middle-of-the-pack in an extraordinarily deep SEC but have plenty of firepower and pitching to make a run in NCAAs. MLB Draft prospect Henry Ford leads a slugging lineup with 19 home runs and 56 RBIs, while Tegan Kuhns (3.39 ERA, 100 strikeouts in 77 innings) tops the rotation.
ECU’s offense runs through senior Jack Herring, who gets on base nearly half the time (.498 OBP) and has racked up a .358 batting average with 17 doubles, nine homers and 51 RBIs. On the pitching side, not many miss bats like junior lefty Ethan Norby, who has fanned 120 in 83.2 innings
