Florida State baseball’s Tallahassee Regional game against Coastal Carolina has been suspended after two weather delays that paused play for over four hours.
The No. 10-seeded Seminoles lead, 2-1, after a Cal Fisher home run in the bottom of the fifth inning, moments before the second and final weather delay of the day. The final four innings of the game will be played on Sunday morning, with the time to be determined.
The winners’ bracket game between Northern Illinois and St. John’s will be played Sunday afternoon, after the conclusion of the Seminoles game vs. Coastal Carolina.
The game was put into its first weather delay in the fourth inning, with FSU trailing the Chanticleers 1-0 after a third-inning single from Trace Mazon brought Walker Mitchell home. It was the lone blemish on a four-inning, 51-pitch outing for Wes Mendes, who struck out eight in his weather-shortened appearance.
It should have been a short delay; however, the tarp was removed quickly after it was cloaked over the field for less than 10 minutes, and rain intensified in the area after its removal.
The result of that? A mad scramble from the grounds crew, and members of FSU and Coastal Carolina’s teams pulling the tarp back onto the field.
The tarp failed to properly cover the first base area, which resulted in significant water buildup, and that forced the grounds crew to spend nearly two hours getting the playing surface back up to standard.

The game resumed for just over 20 minutes, and in that time, FSU stormed into the lead.
Prior to the delay, Brayden Dowd worked a long at-bat against Flukey, getting into a 3-2 count with two outs and Stuetzer on second base. He was called out on strikes with a pitch high in the zone, and the Seminoles didn’t agree, including third base coach Ty Megahee, who vocalized his frustrations with the home plate umpire, resulting in his ejection.
Hunter Carns walked in an at-bat that started prior to the first rain delay, and he was later brought home to tie the game at one by Nathan Cmeyla in the bottom of the fourth. Brodie Purcell replaced Mendes, who threw 51 pitches and struck out eight in his appearance, and Purcell worked a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fifth.
Cal Fisher put the Seminoles ahead, 2-1, in the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run, only his third of the season. It was a no-doubt blast that went 399 feet and 104 MPH off his bat that got a weather-scorened crowd at Howser on its feet.
It was a significant moment, as the game entered a second weather delay that resulted in the suspension of play, just minutes after Fisher’s home run.
