ESPN recently put together its ranking of each team’s projected starting lineups, and within that article, analysts covered several other topics, which includes identifying a key “nonstarter” to know.
So, who was the pick for the Jacksonville Jaguars? Well, Aaron Schatz selected safety Caleb Ransaw.
“He’s fast (4.33 in the 40) and explosive with good tackling skills,” Schatz wrote. “The Jaguars have moved him to safety, although he could also play nickel if necessary.”
A foot injury suffered last training camp kept Ransaw sidelined for his entire rookie season. Although unable to get onto the field, Liam Coen said that Ransaw used that time to familiarize himself with the ins and outs of the playbook.
Coen also added that this will be an important offseason and training camp for Ransaw, so he can put that knowledge of the defense into action on the field.
The expected starters at safety for the Jaguars are Eric Murray and Antonio Johnson, but in Anthony Campanile’s defense that often utilizes three safeties, Ransaw could certainly carve out a role. His ability to be relied upon at deep safety will allow Campanile to move Johnson around.
During his college career, Ransaw was sticky in coverage and proved to be a sound tackler.
