PIEDMONT — Alexandria shook off a sluggish start to capture the championship at Piedmont’s annual 7-on-7 passing camp Saturday.
The Valley Cubs defeated Piedmont in the title game, keeping the Bulldogs out of the end zone throughout the entire 20-minute session.
“We don’t do many of these, but I thought we really got better,” Alexandria head coach Todd Ginn said.
To reach the championship game, Alexandria defeated Glencoe in the semifinals. Ginn said the Valley Cubs made big plays when they needed to, including a critical interception by Johnathan Santos against the Yellow Jackets.
“Johnny Santos got a lot better today. He showed some things,” Ginn said. “I saw him progress and was really pleased with the way he played.”
Alexandria dropped its 9 a.m. opener to Weaver to begin the competition.
“We didn’t start off well this morning against Weaver,” Ginn said. “We didn’t really get out of bed. I told our guys, ‘We’re still holding onto the pillow.’”
The Valley Cubs woke up after that, rattling off six straight wins to claim the title.
“You know, shoot, Alexandria is athletic, and it showed in that last game,” Piedmont head coach Jonathan Miller said.
Piedmont won its first six games before coming up short in the final. Miller said it was good to see the Bulldogs compete against other teams.
“I thought, overall, it was a good day for us. … We made it to the last game, which is a plus,” he said.
Piedmont reached the semifinals by defeating White Plains. The Wildcats went toe-to-toe with the Bulldogs for 20 minutes before falling in the final seconds.
“I thought we competed really well,” White Plains head coach Clint Smith said. “We made it down here to the semifinals, had a chance to win it and go to the finals, but Piedmont made one more play than we did.
“But, I thought we had a good day. I thought we got better in a lot of ways.”
