A trio of new San Francisco 49ers injury updates came down Wednesday when the team ran its fifth day of training camp.
Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, running back Jordan James and safety Malik Mustapha are all out of Wednesday’s session dealing with various ailments.
Pearsall’s injury is the biggest red flag because according to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner the team has concern and is looking into all options with complications from the knee injury Pearsall initially suffered in Week 4 of last season.
The PCL injury Pearsall sustained in Week 4 cost him eight regular season games and one playoff game. Now it may cost him even more time as he deals with an injury for the third consecutive training camp.
James and Mustapha were both hurt in Monday’s session per NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco. It’s fractured ribs for James and a hamstring strain for Mustapha. There’s no immediate timetable for their returns.
James is firmly in the mix to back up Christian McCaffrey, but hitting the sidelines for any extended period could cost him dearly in the battle to win that RB2 job. This is the second time in as many training camps that James has sustained an injury. Last year he lost virtually the entire preseason to a broken finger. Now he’ll miss at least a little time with his ribs injury.
It’s also the second year in a row for Mustapha to miss time with an injury in camp. Last year he was recovering from an offseason ACL repair and didn’t return until the middle of the season. It’s unclear how severe his hamstring issue is.
