Former San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Joshua Dobbs is back on an NFL roster after the Detroit Lions agreed to sign him to a one-year contract worth up to $1.425 million per NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo.
Dobbs was primarily the 49ers’ third-string signal caller in 2024 with Brandon Allen serving as the backup to Brock Purdy. San Francisco’s starting QB missed two games in that season. Allen started the first one in Week 12 against the Green Bay Packers. Dobbs got the start in the season finale against the Arizona Cardinals.
The 49ers lost Dobbs’ lone start 47-26, but the QB completed 29-of-43 throws for 326 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also scored a rushing touchdown and posted 17 yards on eight carries.
Dobbs’ lack of a regular backup role led him to explore other avenues to an NFL roster for the 2025 season and he wound up seeing action in four games for the New England Patriots where completed seven-of-10 throws for 65 yards. San Francisco, meanwhile, let Dobbs and Allen both walk and signed Mac Jones to a two-year contract last offseason.
Detroit signed Dobbs after their backup QB Teddy Bridgewater announced his retirement.
