Dan Quinn is preaching, ‘the best shape of your life’, says one Commander.
Jaylin Lane, a second-year receiver out of Virginia Tech, says this year’s training camp is definitely different than last year’s camp, which was his first. “You can tell, DQ has turned it up a notch,” expressed Lane when a guest on the “BMitch & Finlay” show on 106.7 the Fan on Monday.
Lane, who in his first NFL year was primarily the punt returner, was targeted 32 times and came away with 16 receptions in 2025. When asked about the Commanders signing WR Stefon Diggs, Lane stated, “He’s coming in with knowledge, and he’s trying to give it to everybody. From day one he was coming to me talking, ‘This is what I am seeing.’ And he doesn’t even know the playbook yet. He knows the routes, he understands concepts.”

Only one day with Diggs and Lane was already convinced Diggs can be a real asset on the field and in the meeting rooms for the Commanders. “It’s cool to have another vet guy, along with Terry (McLaurin) in the room. Indeed, in 161 NFL games of experience, Diggs has 942 receptions for 11,504 reception yards while averaging 12.2 yards per reception, scoring 74 touchdowns.
In his second NFL training camp, Lane says he is already feeling more comfortable running the routes and understanding the offense. Where Lane made his mark for the Commanders during his rookie season was as the punt returner. Lane returned two punts for touchdowns, one against the Raiders and one against the NY Giants.
According to Lane, the special team meetings have already witnessed some team energy and team spirit. Lane said he sees “the guys are ready to work for me, and I’m ready to work for them.” So Lane is looking forward to being the primary punt returner again for the Commanders in 2026.
Lane also mentioned that he would take on whatever role the Commanders coaching staff asks him to perform, mentioning that if they wanted him to also return kickoffs this year, he is willing to do so.
The Commanders have a joint scrimmage Wednesday in Ashburn against the visiting Dolphins, followed by the first preseason game on Friday at Northwest Stadium, also against the Dolphins. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.
