Delaware State and this week’s football foe William & Mary each scored dramatic wins in their season openers.
DSU’s late go-ahead touchdown and a last-second incomplete pass in the end zone by visiting Stony Brook allowed the Hornets to prevail 41-34.
Now comes a tougher task, as William & Mary is ranked 17th nationally after its stunning 35-32 comeback win at then-eighth-ranked Villanova last week.
Kickoff is at 6 p.m. Sept. 5 at Zable Stadium in Williamsburg, Virginia.
For second-year coach DeSean Jackson and the Hornets, it’ll likely require a cleaner and more complete effort.
“We have a certain mindset here,” Jackson said, “and we know every time we get the opportunity to go out on the field, we’re being critiqued. There’s a lot of eyes on us. It’s a lot of attention that Delaware State is getting right now.
“So I think our brand of football and the way we want to be aggressive and physical obviously shows. The trajectory of where we want to be in the end of the season is we gotta take one game at a time. I feel like every game we play is a playoff game.”

They were tied for third with Richmond in the 10-team Patriot League’s preseason coaches poll and then beat favorite Villanova last week 35-32 in dramatic fashion.
Down by 10 in the final minute, William & Mary got a field goal with 53 seconds left, recovered an onside kick and scored a touchdown with 22 seconds left to tie the game and then intercepted a pass to set up a game-winning 45-yard field goal as time expired.
