Giuseppe Bergomi has urged Inter Milan to show courage when they face Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu, warning that a purely defensive approach would leave them with little chance of getting a result.
The Inter legend knows the stadium better than most. He faced Real Madrid 10 times during his career, including his first European appearance as a 17-year-old, and still regards the Bernabeu as the most impressive venue in world football.
“That moment is unforgettable. It was a European Cup match in 1981; we lost 2–0 with goals from Juanito and Santillana, and I came on as a substitute in the second half whilst still a teenager.
“I was absolutely awestruck to be playing for the first time in such a magnificent stadium steeped in history as the Bernabeu,” he told AS.
Bergomi knows the Bernabeu challenge
Bergomi’s admiration for Real Madrid’s home is undiminished decades after that first experience.
“Very much so. Not just as a player but as a spectator too.
“Quite apart from its aura and its legendary status, it’s the most beautiful and impressive stadium in the world, without a doubt.
“It’s marvellous what they’ve built, and setting foot in such a legendary venue is a unique sensation.
“Luckily, this Tuesday I’ll be able to experience it all over again.”

The former defender believes the stadium itself contributes to Real Madrid’s extraordinary European record.
“It’s their home ground, and they feel right at home there. They feel more at ease than anyone else in this competition; they never give up, and no other team in the world has that.
“They’ve built an unrivalled legacy based on legendary matches and unforgettable comebacks.”
Inter must be brave against Mourinho’s Madrid
Bergomi believes Inter cannot simply attempt to survive the evening.
“I hope Inter show courage. If we go out there just to defend, we won’t stand a chance.
“When you go to the Bernabeu, thinking you can dominate the match is a pipe dream, but the aim must be to show the courage and the right attitude to try and take control in midfield, where they’re missing some key players.
“Mourinho is changing aspects of the game and building a team that’s strong in defence and determined in attack, but they can be beaten.”
Bergomi picks Valverde and Mbappe
While acknowledging the quality of Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham, Bergomi identified Federico Valverde as the Madrid player he admires most.

“He’s a box-to-box midfielder who defends, attacks, has a good shot, is very consistent and always steps up when the going gets tough.
“Based on my understanding of football, I think Valverde is an impressive player who embodies both Real Madrid and the Madrid spirit.”
His admiration for Mbappe is even stronger when it comes to individual honours.
“He’s a different sort of player, but, obviously, I love him. He’s a striker of the very highest calibre.
“In absolute terms, I think he’s the one who most deserves the next Ballon d’Or right now.”
Bergomi also offered a glowing assessment of Mourinho, whom he knows from the Portuguese coach’s historic spell at Inter.
“He’s a special manager because, aside from his intelligence, tactical ability, credibility, flexibility in adapting to the ever-changing nature of football and his charisma, he is someone who knows how to forge links with the players, the staff and the supporters.
“That’s very important for getting through difficult times, creating a good atmosphere and helping a team to grow,” he concluded.
