The Tennessee Titans could be without one of their most productive defensive players when they begin the 2026 NFL season.
Linebacker Cedric Gray has entered the NFL’s concussion protocol after being involved in a UTV accident over the weekend in Tennessee, the team announced Monday.
According to the Titans, Gray was driving the vehicle when the accident occurred and suffered a concussion along with other minor injuries. A team source told ESPN that alcohol and reckless driving were not factors in the incident.
While the injuries were described as minor outside of the concussion, Gray’s availability for Tennessee’s Week 1 matchup against the New York Jets is now uncertain.
The Titans are scheduled to host the Jets on Sunday at Nissan Stadium.
Before Gray can return to the field, he must complete the NFL’s required concussion protocol. The process includes several stages designed to determine whether a player can safely resume football activities.

Gray will also have to be evaluated by an independent neurological consultant. He can only be cleared to play once the consultant and Tennessee’s team physician agree that his concussion symptoms have been resolved.
The Titans expressed optimism about Gray’s recovery while making it clear his health will come first.
“We look forward to Cedric returning to the field soon and in full health when he clears the NFL’s concussion protocol,” the organization said in a statement.
Gray’s potential absence would be significant for Tennessee’s defense.
The linebacker emerged as one of the team’s most productive defenders last season, starting 16 games and leading the Titans with 164 tackles. His ability to consistently find the football made him an important part of Tennessee’s defensive unit heading into 2026.
There is still an opportunity for Gray to complete the protocol and receive clearance before Sunday’s opener.
For now, however, his status remains uncertain.
With the Jets coming to Nashville and Week 1 quickly approaching, Gray’s progress through concussion protocol will be one of the biggest situations for the Titans to monitor throughout the week.
