The NFL season is underway, and last season’s top two MVP candidates have had starts to forget, making unwanted history in the process.
For the first time in NFL history, the top two finishers in the previous season’s MVP voting each saw their team score 10 or fewer points in the season opener. Both Drake Maye and Matthew Stafford entered 2026 with high expectations, but neither quarterback was able to deliver an ideal start.

Maye’s turnover troubles continue
MVP runner-up and Super Bowl finalist Drake Maye struggled in the New England Patriots’ 13-10 loss to the defending champion Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday, in a rematch of Super Bowl 60.
The third-year quarterback continued a troubling turnover trend that began during last season’s playoffs. Maye threw three interceptions in the fourth quarter, including a costly interception in the end zone on the Patriots’ final drive with just 26 seconds remaining.
The decision was particularly painful because New England still had the opportunity to kick a field goal and tie the game. Instead, the turnover effectively ended the Patriots’ comeback hopes.
Maye finished the night with 179 passing yards and one touchdown. The Patriots’ 10 points were their fewest in a game since Week 5 of the 2024 season, adding to what was otherwise a frustrating offensive performance.

Stafford struggles in Australia
Later, Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford opened his 17th NFL season against the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia. The reigning MVP also endured a difficult outing.
The 38-year-old quarterback threw just one interception, but his overall production was limited. Stafford finished with only 155 passing yards, his lowest total since Week 11 against the Seahawks in 2025.
While neither quarterback completely fell apart, both performances were far below the standards expected from the two players who finished atop last season’s MVP voting.
Fortunately for Maye and Stafford, there is plenty of football remaining. The Patriots will look to rebound against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2, while the Rams return home to host the New York Giants.
Both quarterbacks will be hoping their disappointing openers are quickly forgotten.
