BOERNE – Early season Boerne Champion football isn’t as much about statistics as it is about aesthetics.
And, it looks beautiful for the Chargers.
Champion delivered its third rout this season with a 55-0 victory against Cedar Creek in their District 13-5A-I opener Friday at Boerne ISD Stadium.
Save for a kneel down to close the first half, the Chargers scored touchdowns on each of their possessions, including two in the second half that was quickly contested thanks to a merciful timekeeper who kept things going.
Chargers sophomore Ryder Flugence, the nation’s top-ranked college football recruit for the 2029 class, accounted for 223 total yards and three touchdown, all in the first half as the Chargers led 41-0 at intermission.

“Putting up 55 points is not easy to do,” Flugence said. “It was great execution on both side of the ball. Defense was able to get us some turnovers, some critical stops and we just executed well. But at the same time, it means nothing. We have to get to next week.”
Flugence completed 6 of 11 passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 95 yards on four carries. While those aren’t off-the-charts numbers, the way they were gained were another story.
Flugence’s athleticism is undeniable as he showed while his towering presence at 6-foot-5 and 205 pounds seemingly floated around defenders, ala Vince Young, on a 62-yard touchdown that put the Chargers ahead, 13-0 in the first quarter.
Then, he connected with touchdown passes of 49 yards to William Burgess and 24 yards to Mason Clayton – also in the first quarter – for a 27-0 lead.
“He’s very calm and collected,” senior running back Caleb Farias said of Flugence. “He’s very confident in his decisions. He doesn’t double guess himself. You know if we are all wrong, we are all right and that’s just a great trait. He’s dropping dimes. He’s just patient. He makes the right reads and he’s just doing great.”
Farias rushed eight times for 123 yards with touchdowns of 15, 34 and 29 yards in the first half.
“None of this was possible without the O-line,” Farias said. “They’re blocking great. They’re physical. They love the game. And the brotherhood we have on this team is just amazing.”
The Chargers (3-0), ranked No. 7 in the area by the Express-News and No. 6 in Class 5A Division I in the state, outgained Cedar Creek (2-1), 511-101, including 340-42 in the first half.
“We all just played our game,” senior defensive lineman Aiden Syskal said. “We put in the work, day in and day out and we knew what we were capable of. We just went and executed what was planned.”
Champion kept the Eagles out of the end zone after starting two drives deep in Chargers’ territory in the first half.
The Eagles looked much less like a team off to its best start in six years, and more like the one that had gone 2-48 from 2021 to 2025.
The latest romp fell in line with their two previous victories – 60-7 against Laredo United South and 62-14 against New Braunfels Long Creek.
And, like those games, most of the Chargers starters watched from the sidelines as the reserves gained some valuable playing time in the second half.
Finn Ryan caught a 14-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter and Easton Hamel scored a 6-yard touchdown run in the fourth.
