Chiefs’ first-round rookie CB Mansoor Delane intercepts Bo Nix in his first NFL series, then leaves game with shoulder injury

The Kansas City Chiefs raised some eyebrows when they traded up to the No. 6 pick in April’s NFL Draft to select LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane.

One series into the season, it looks like a pretty smart move.

The Kansas City Chiefs sacked Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix on the first play of their season Monday night. On the third play, Nix threw a downfield pass into double coverage on third-and-11.

Delane was there to make a play and intercepted Nix near midfield.

The interception set Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes up for his first game action since sustaining a torn ACL last season. The Chiefs pounded the ground, and Mahomes capped a 10-play, 46-yard drive with a 15-yard touchdown scramble through the middle of Denver’s defense.

It added up to a sensational start to Kansas City’s season but one that may have come at a cost.

Delane wasn’t on the field for Kansas City’s second defensive series, and the Chiefs announced that he was questionable to return with a shoulder injury. The nature and severity of his injury was not initially clear.
